Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report 6/26/14

Wow... Unbelievable fishing in Central Wisconsin for all species this past week.  With warmer water temperatures (now in the 70's) the fish are going on a feeding frenzy!

The musky bite is as good as it can get, with not only numbers of fish (which you don't often hear while talking about musky fishing ) but some real giants up too.  This past week we have had multiple fish outings plus numerous fish pushing and up to that magical 50 inch mark!  Most of the action is coming on bucktails and topwater baits worked in and around weedy areas.

The walleye bite has been fantastic this past week. We are catching numbers of fish in the 15 to 20 inch range which are good for eating, and quite a few fish over that 20 inch mark which are released.  Most of the action this past week has been from walleyes holding tight to structure in 6 to 10 feet of water.  Weedless Ricky from Rick Jaroch of Baitmaker Tackle are working the best when tipped with minnows or a half a crawler.  The key is using the weedless jigs to keep in contact with the structure.

We have also been doing very well on both crappies and bluegills this past week.  A lot of the fish are either suspended over deep water or they are holding tight to structure. For the most part the crappies are holding over the deeper water ( 12 to 16 feet deep) about 4 to 7 feet down.  They can be caught by slip drifting with a spider rig set-up or by long line trolling tiny crankbaits.

If your interested in bluegills they are for the mainly holding in less than 6 feet of water and very tight to structure (downed timber, stumps, weeds etc...)  To target the bluegills we have been using tiny 1/32 ounce jigs tipped with a piece of crawler, suspending it below a bobber, and tossing it into the structure. We are also rigging the jig and crawler up without any floatation at all and just letting it sink to the bottom near the structure.  Both are working equally as well.

If bass angling is your forte, top water action is about as hot as it can get right now. We are seeing lots of nice fish in shallow water areas around rocky shorelines, downed timber and docks.  Not only are topwater baits working well but we are also catching a lot of nice fish on jigs tipped with beaver tails and tubes.

Have a great week,

Phil Schweik
