Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report 6-7-17
Water levels have stabilized in the central Wisconsin area and fishing is getting back to normal. The water temperatures as of June 1st were in the low to mid 60 degree range with good visibility.
Walleye anglers are having their best luck with jig and minnow combinations right now but a few guys are trolling crankbaits along the channel edges and over shallow flats. The best action has been early and late in the day but there have been periods of good mid-day activity when the sun dips behind the clouds.
Bluegill and crappie anglers are seeing lots of fish up shallow that are either spawning or getting ready to spawn. This can be by far the easiest and most fun time of the year to catch numbers of both species. This is also a great time to get kids introduced into fishing as there is plenty of action and kids won’t get bored.
The bite for bass has been very good especially since we haven’t even been targeting them. Most of the bass are being caught on jigs tipped with minnows while walleye fishing but we are also catching a few on Rapala Rippin Raps and regular Rapalas.
If your interest is big fish, muskies and pike were both on the prowl this last week and it was very good for both species. Bucktails were the best bait for us, but we also caught fish on Bulldawgs and Suick’s. We targeted mainly shallow area locations in 2 to 8 feet of water associated with wood and boulders. The key to success was working our baits very slowly and methodically as opposed to the traditional erratic and fast action that you would normally do to entice a musky.
Have a great week,
Phil Schweik
