As we enter the last days of September and move into October the water temperatures in our area have dropped to the low 60's and in some areas the upper 50's. The bite for walleyes has been very good and a lot of nice fish are being taken. Most of the action is coming by guys working the deeper areas of the river with jig and minnow combinations. The crappie bite is as good as it has been all year long with nice catches of slab crappies being taken from 10 to 14 feet of water along the old river channel. Most of the fish are being caught by running slip bobbers rigged up with small crappie sized minnows set 2 to 4 feet off the bottom. Bass anglers have been seeing their share of the action as well with nice catches of big bronzebacks. Most of the action for bass has been associated with finding submerged rocks. These rocks will warm up throughout the day and attract small baitfish and in turn attract the larger predator fish like the bass. Guys targeting the top predator of all have been having very good success with muskies. The musky bite has really turned on and baits like Suicks, Mantas, and Reef Hawgs are really coming into their own right now. Also another good bait is live suckers suspended a few feet below a big bobber. Local hunters are finding that the recent cooler temperatures are working out very well for them. The area duck and goose hunters are having a field day. Local marshes and reservoirs along with area fields are loaded with all kinds of local ducks and geese. A proper decoy set-up along with a good call and an accurate gun can make for a great day of hunting. Deer hunters are finding and seeing a lot of movement this past week. Most of the activity has been associated around area local farm fields, private food plots and areas with water. With the baiting ban in Marathon County going on the next best thing is having a food plot. I know most of you have read about me going over this before but food plots really work. I had some food plots put in this year by Jim Reed of Reed and Hoppe's Wildlife Food Plots and they are doing great! I checked my food plots the other day and in the middle of the afternoon there were 4 fully bearded tom turkeys on the one food plot along with 3 nice does right in the middle of the day. I checked my food plots yesterday and a nice 8 point buck was on the field. This one was at 10:00 in the morning. The 2013 bear season is quickly coming to an end and for many lucky hunters it has been a successful one. For those of you that haven't taken a bear, don't give up yet. I had a hunter bag his bear on the final day of the season last year. A couple of quick final tips that might help are: First and foremost be patient, the season isn't over yet. Remember to keep your baits active and keep using different baits when you head in. One other thing that may help is if the bears have you patterned, which they may, you might want to have a friend walk in with you to your stand. When heading in neither of you should talk, what you are doing is you are simulating a baiting sequence. Once your at the bait station the hunter quietly climbs into the stand and the friend simulates a baiting sequence and then leaves imitating your baiting and leaving. With this action the bears think you came in, baited and left. They have no idea that there was two of you and they feel comfortable coming into the bait. Also I would like to share with you and congratulate good friends of mine: Joshua and Tara Conger on the birth of their new baby. Cassidy Isle Conger was born at 7:56am today, weighing 7 lbs. 3 ounces and 20 inches long. Cassidy is beautiful and healthy!
