Chequamegon Bay Fishing Report: Submitted by Fishing Guide Jim Hudson and the Ashland Chamber of Commerce

Looks like a good opener coming up on May 5th. That’s when you can start chasing the SmallMouth Bass in the Bay.

Lots of Coho being caught and a few Browns, Splake, Steelhead and shallow Lake Trout thrown in the mix. Trolling has been the main method to catching the fish. The water is now starting to warm up Leadcore, Dipsys, and Downriggers are all a part of the equation now, with Spoons and Flasher/Dodger - Fly rigs needing to be used, especially for Salmon.

Lake Trout fishing is going well, and reports are coming in that anglers have been catching some big fish.

Wind is really the limiting factor, but, on the days there is calm weather, its been good. Jigging is a great way to catch them right now. Hit those spots and anchor, use a drift sock, or slip the water with your trolling motor to move slowly and you will get hooked up. Again, same type of lures and bait you would use for ice fishing out here. Heavy bucktails, spoons, or beetles tipped with some cut-bait. Trolling has been good too, mainly right on the bottom.

Panfish have been biting on the inland waters. Crappies are the main target right now, water is still a bit cold for good Bluegill action. Weeds associated with spawning areas are key, as is the warmest water possible. Also, no need for early starts, right now, the heat of the day is the best time to catch them. Spawn is still a ways off. Tannic water is better right now then clear water. With that, the opener should be great for Walleye action, as almost all lakes will be post spawn and the fish will be hungry. Lots of fish will still be up shallow, again, weeds.

Good FISHING
