Ashland Area Fishing Report for Oct. 3, 2014

~ Fishing Guide Roger LaPenter and wife Carolyn from Anglers All715/682-5754 (http://www.anglersallwisconsin.com), report the following:

This report is about the Ashland side of Chequamegon Bay. Trout and salmon are being caught at the mouths of the Sioux and Onion rivers, as well as off of Long Island. Anglers are snagging them early in the day mostly by flat-lining with stickbaits.

Carolyn LaPenter said the Coho salmon are not out in large numbers yet, but they are starting to show up as the water temperatures cool down. “The ones that are being caught right now are the larger Cohos,” she noted.

Some of the best smallmouth bass fishing of the year is coming up and anglers are already getting in on that classic fall bite. “A lot depends on the wind speed,” Carolyn said. “That is one of the governing factors.”

The smallies are into their fall feeding patterns, frequenting their usual haunts. Anglers are finding the best bite is on sucker minnows as the walleye are feeding heavily now to fatten up in anticipation of winter.

The Brule River is looking great right now as well.  Steelhead are trickling in and will only get better as the fall moves on.

The walleye are starting to transition, moving into shallow waters, and people are snagging them out near the rock pile, off the channel ledges and over the weed beds.
