Ashland Area Fishing Report for Aug. 22, 2014

~ Fishing Guide Roger LaPenter and wife Carolyn from Anglers All715/682-5754 (http://www.anglersallwisconsin.com), report the following:

This report is about the Ashland side of Chequamegon Bay.  Fishing right around Ashland has been good for a wide variety of fish, and trolling the recent mud lines has been good for walleyes in the early mornings and evenings.

“We had another great week of fairly stable weather and classic summer fishing out on the big water,” observed Luke Kavajecz, fishing guide for Anglers All.  “Water temps out there ranged from 65 into the mid-70s in some areas.”

Smallmouth fishing was good all week with lots of fish both shallow and deep and customers got into fish on both light tackle and fly fishing, Luke said.  On the light tackle side of things, you can't go wrong with a sucker minnow rigged on a circle hook.  Otherwise, soft plastics such as twister tails, or topwater baits in the early mornings or evenings will get fish moving.

“Fly fishing has been really fun lately, as there are fun numbers of fish up shallow in certain areas.  The good old Clouser Minnow was the best fly, but we were getting fish on Murdich Minnows and crayfish patterns when we find fish up in the rocks.”

There have been a few brown trout splashing around out there, and there have been good reports of browns out into the Apostle Islands.  The trout and salmon fishing will really get going in the next few weeks, and always presents a fun fishing opportunity.  It’s never too early to get excited for the fall shallow water trout and salmon fishing!

Anglers are catching northern pike, rock bass and small perch along the shoreline.  Great places to go are the Xcel Energy “hot pond,” the city boat landing and the Ashland Marina inside the breakwall, according to Carolyn LaPenter.
