4/16/14 Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report

I took a walk through the woods behind the house yesterday and found a nice shed antler from a year old buck.  It is not really what I was looking for, but it reminds me that with the snow diminishing, and ground visibility increasing, that this is a good time for locating shed antlers.  Finding shed antlers kind if gives you an idea of the bucks that are remaining in the area and the ones that you might be hunting next season.

Great walleye fishing this past week with some real monster walleyes being caught.  Most of the action is from slack water areas in less than 12 feet of water and as shallow as 1 to 3 feet during low light periods.  Jig and minnow combinations or plastics are working well in the deeper water and crankbaits are working well in the shallower areas.

Ice fishing for the most part is over for the season. A few guys are still braving the conditions but  I would advise against travelling on any remaining ice at this time of the year.

Turkey season is upon us and despite the long hard winter the turkey populating in Central Wisconsin looks good.  Opening day has come with snow and in some areas blizzard like conditions, but don't let that stop you form hunting, this can be a great time of the season to bag your tom.  Food sources and heavy pine cover are key areas to hunt during conditions like this.

Have a great week,

Phil Schweik
