1-6-14 Price County Fishing Report

Last week I took my youngest son out on the ice. Three-year old Don had a blast as I got him on a bite of smaller Crappie and Bluegills. It didn't matter to Don that most of the fish were small and he had just as much fun watching them swim back down the hole as he had reeling the fish in.

Most of the Crappie on this day came on dead sticks using minnows as bait. A dead stick is simply a limber ice rod that is set up with no bobber or strike indicator; the rod is placed in a rod holder or across the top of a bucket and when the fish hits it bends the rod down to show a strike. I often use this set up when the Crappie are hitting your bait and dropping it right away, like those days when your bobber goes down a few inches and pops back up before you set the hook. It seems that the fish like that little tension on the line sometimes and keep pulling on the line playing a little tug of war with your rod. I can't really explain why this works over a bobber but sometimes it just does. So I go with it!!!

The walleye bite has been best right at dark on Golden Shiners. We did get a few eater walleye a few days ago mid-day jigging an inside turn of the old river channel on an area lake. We were fishing in about 13 feet of water when the fish hit and we were using smaller jigging spoons with fathead minnows.

Pike action is still doing ok on most area lakes during the day and don't overlook those Trout lakes that are still open for fishing in the Price County area as Trout anglers are reporting some great action.
