1-2-14 Ashland Area Fishing Report

Fishing Guide Nate Baron from Up North Guide Service and Fishing Guide Scott Bretting from River Rock Inn and Bait Shop, 715-682-3232 http://riverrockinn.net Reports: The fishing has been excellent on Chequamegon Bay and Lake Superior following the recent Snowfall and the Holidays. Snow accumulation on the ice is much greater in the Bay due to strong NE winds during the last storm. Travel on the ice is good out from Washburn and North with minimal snow on the ice. Ice roads have been started in the Bay the last couple of days. You may access the roads from Kreher Park and behind Anglers All in Ashland. Anglers out in the Bay have been picking up a mixed bag of Perch, Trout, Salmon, Walleye and Whitefish. Jigging spoons tipped with a minnow head and Tip-ups have been working well. The trout, Salmon and Walleye bite has been outstanding this past week with a lot of Anglers following the new ice up the North shoreline. Exercise with extreme caution North of Houghton Point to Red Cliff. The mouth of the Sioux and the Onion River has been producing some nice catches of Coho Salmon and Brown Trout in 4 - 35 FOW. Ice thickness varies from 3-7 "off the River mouths. Jigging Buckshots, Swedish pimples, Kastmasters and Vibratos have all been producing well. The color of Jig seems to depend on the day. Tip-ups and Automatic Fishermans with a Lake Shiner have also been putting some nice Browns on the ice this past week. Remember treat all ice as new ice and check, check, check! Ice thicknesses vary greatly due to currents. Happy New Year and tight lines to all !

Fishing Guide Roger LaPenter from Anglers All, (715)-682-5754, http://www.anglersallwisconsin.comReports: This report is about the Ashland side of the Bay. People are walking out from shore to ice fish and using snowmobiles. They are checking their way with a spud. There is approximately 18 inches of ice with snow cover in the Bay Proper. If you are thinking of venturing out to Ice Fish in other areas you should call ahead to ask what other Anglers and Guides are saying about the ice in those areas. The wet spots have more than likely frozen over but Anglers should always be aware that there may be some near shore. Anglers are reporting every species of fish seem to be biting. You never know what you will catch on any given day but you will catch fish!!! The Inland Lakes in Ashland County have had decent Crappie and Pan fishing. Most of the slush is now frozen over on the Inlands. For a safe, current ice fishing report give us a call at Anglers All and we will keep you informed. In the mean time, check over your ice fishing gear and be prepared for Ice Fishing, always keeping safety in mind first! Mark your calendars for January 18th and 19th for Wisconsin free fishing weekend!

The Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce, visitashland.com 800-284-9484 reports: If you would like an updated ice fishing report or an updated snowmobile report, check out www.visitashland.com . Fish anywhere in Wisconsin without a license or trout stamp on Free Fishing Weekend, January 18th and 19th.This includes all inland waters and Wisconsin's side of the Great Lakes and Mississippi River. Other fishing rules apply, such as limits on the number and size of fish you can keep and any seasons when you must release certain fish species. So, pack up the family or call your friends and head to the water for fishing fun! For more information go to www.dnr.wi.gov  and search “Free fishing Weekend.” This is a great way to introduce new anglers to ice fishing!
