Ashland Area Fishing Report for Oct. 15, 2015

~ Fishing guides Roger LaPenter and Luke Kavajecz from Anglers All, 715/682-5754, report the following:

This report is about the Ashland side of Chequamegon Bay.  Welcome to what one local guide calls “the best time of year!”  The smallmouth bass are into their fall feeding patterns, frequenting their typical haunts such as the rock pile and breakwall.

“We’re waiting for the water temperatures to cool down before all of the fish, like the walleye, get into their usual fall patterns,” said Carolyn Swartz, co-owner of Anglers All.

“The water is cooling down, but temperatures are still in the mid 50s on the bay, which is pretty warm for this time of year,” added fishing guide Luke Kavajecz of Anglers All in Ashland.  “The big winds we’re having will help with that.”

Although the smallmouth bass will stay out in the deeper water, the cool fall weather will be a boon to trout and salmon fishermen.  The coho salmon are around off and on in the streams and at the mouths of rivers.  Some days seem better than others, but they're showing up and will continue to do so as fall progresses.

“Folks are trolling at the head of the bay and casting for coho salmon, brown trout and splake with fairly good success depending on the day,” according to Carolyn, “as well as the Sioux and Onion rivers.”  She said the salmon that are being caught are big ones, with recent reports of cohos up to 8 pounds.

“Steelhead fishing is getting better on the Brule and with the fall colors in full swing, there's not a finer place to be than on the river in search of fall chrome,” Luke observed.

He said the musky fishing has “been really good” on both the lake and the inland rivers.  “This is a great time of year for a drift boat trip in search of those toothy critters,” he noted.

“The fall bite will continue until we get some ice, which is hopefully a long ways away as far as I'm concerned,” said Luke.  “Get out there and enjoy fall!”

Some of the best smallmouth bass fishing of the year is coming up in the Chequamegon Bay region and anglers like this are already getting in on that classic fall bite.  “The inland lakes offer great fall fishing as well when conditions on the big water get nasty,” noted Luke Kavajecz, fishing guide with Ashland’s Anglers All.   (Photo courtesy of Luke Kavajecz)

On Wisconsin Outdoors

Anglers in far northern Wisconsin are having a blast fishing Lake Superior, Chequamegon Bay and associated streams and tributaries.  “The best of the fall smallmouth bite is still coming, but it's still pretty fun out there right now,” commented Ashland fishing guide Luke Kavajecz of Anglers All.   (Photo courtesy of Luke Kavajecz)
