A Perfect Canadian Birthday Present
By Genesee, Wisconsin Angler Jim Beres
We were trolling our way back to shore on Monday May 28th on a lake in Ontario Canada when my son Dustin Beres of East Troy Wisconsin noticed something in the water. As we came closer we realized it was a calf moose. We were all a bit shocked because we didn't see the cow anywhere. The calf was crying and trying to climb up a slippery rock face with no luck.
Our captain, long time fishing buddy and old college roommate Pat (The Blowhole) Richter of Cameron, Wisconsin slowly backed up the boat to the edge of the island. We froze for a moment taking it all in. Knowing we had to help the little guy out we grabbed a canoe paddle from our boat and Richter was able to get him over the rock on to dry land.
I was taking pictures every chance I had while watching for momma out of the corner of my eye. The calf wound up safely on land. We motored away looking at each other in pure amazement. It pays to keep a camera with you while fishing in Canada.
By the way it was also my birthday that day. I couldn't have asked for a better present.
