Mayfly Hatch Doesn’t Shut Down Turtle Flambeau
By Professional Guide Jerry “Jerkbait” Hartigan
The mayfly hatch is going strong on The Turtle Flambeau Flowage right now, but the fishing is still doing good. The last few days we have been picking up walleyes on big mud flats that have some wood mixed in. Crawlers seem to be doing best, but I am still getting some fish on minnows. 10 to 12ft is the depth that most of the active fish are in.
We are also picking up some big perch that are mixed with the walleyes. Smallmouth are still along the shorelines, but nothing like they were a week or so ago. They are definitely gorging themselves on the mayflys, but we also saw smallies chasing minnows along rock and sand edges.
We had two muskies on. One grabbed a perch and one grabbed a smallmouth. Neither were landed. I will be out every day this week so I will try to give you an update.
