Stevens Point Flowage Fishing Report July 9th 2012

With the water temps in the high 70's the fishing has been explosive the past weeks for my clients as were the excellent fireworks display here on the Stevens Point Flowage. All the rain the northern part of the state really got the fish biting well with good current flow a couple weeks ago. My clients have been averaging 80 plus fish per outing.
Walleyes, bass, northerns with some crappies and bluegills have been putting a smile on my clients’ faces that is priceless. The warm temperatures and unsurpassed weather provided an ideal opportunity to both wet a line and take in a scenic cruise aboard our pontoon boats.
The Jim Havlovick Family outing resulted in 83 fish caught, with a 24 1/2 Walleye caught and released by his son Matt Havlovick the highlight. Stacy LaBlanc added a 20 plus inch slot walleye caught and released, and their group took home 11 walleyes from 15 to 20 inches for a family fish fry. Nice Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike all taken on jig and minnow/crawler combination and released again added to the constant rod action. The jig and bait combo remains our bread and butter presentation.

Again with good current flow a lot of nice fish were being caught in 10 feet of water and less. Rocks, weeds and any current breaks with eddies were the ticket. Current flow as high as 11000 CFS (Cubic feet per second) really got the fish moving and biting. Normally the flow is 1500 CFS and you have to do more searching.
The Bass action has been very consistent on every trip. 15 to 17 inch bass are common size, and they never quit fighting when you hook them. Most of the smallies are holding in 2 to 5 feet of water. Rocks and some deeper wood are the keys. Again 1/16oz 1/8oz and 1/4oz jig and minnow/crawler presentation depending on current spelled success.

Catfish have been consistent on the Stevens Point Flowage and are very easy to catch, with our best presentation targeting deep holes in the main channel or below a dam. We cast, a hook baited up with chicken liver or cut bait and heavy sinker, anchor the rod down and it hasn’t taken long for the fight with Kitty to begin. 3 to 6lb cats are common, but there are 20 pound plus fish present.
