STEVENS POINT FISHING REPORT 4-29-2012

By Professional Guide Kenny Wallock

Walleye Fishing Steven Point WisconsinSpring has arrived early this year here on the Stevens Point Flowage. We had record breaking temperatures in the 70’s/80’s in March along with rain, sleet, snow and very windy conditions this past month.

As the walleye spawn finished early on our local rivers anglers are catching a few post- spawn walleyes, but with the changing fronts and high and low pressure systems, each day is challenging. This should and will change when stable weather happens. A couple weeks ago weather was in the high 60’s till the weekend when two inches of snow showed up.

Walleyes, bass, and northerns are being caught on a ¼ or 1/8 oz. jig, our bread and butter bait along with a few casting shallow-running crankbaits. Water temps are in the low 50’s to high 50’s (surface temp’s).

Fishing in Stevens Point WisconsinThe best spots are backwaters along wood, rocks, downed trees and new weed growth as the water temps are always warmer, but areas with shallow-water rocks in the main river channel should not be overlooked.

Smallmouth bass action is starting to heat up as numbers of fish are transitioning into their spawning mode. Anglers looking to tangle with these bronzebacks should use small spinnerbait’s and #2 or #3 Mepps inline spinners. Crawfish colored crankbaits should not be overlooked.  Please practice CPR. (catch photo and release) the next couple weeks as the bass are staging to spawn.

May and June offer some of the best rod-bending action here on the Stevens Point Flowage. If you have a youth or are a novice fisherman, I would like to introduce you and them to the wonderful fishing experiences Kenny Wallock’s Professional Guiding has to offer. We have a beautiful place here in central Wisconsin and I am very fortunate to call it home.

The 2012 spring turkey hunt is underway and my son Alex and I were fortunate to bag our turkeys  during the first week  of the season. Most of our action has been early morning and mid-day. My turkey was 20lbs sporting a 9 ½ beard.  Alex claimed bragging rights this year with a 24 lbs, 10 inch beard. Take your son or daughter out hunting and they will treasure the memories for a lifetime.

Good luck to all the turkey hunters who have the next couple weeks etched on the Calendar.
