Rice lake Fishing Report 8-27-2013

Warm humid weather this past week feels like the dog days of summer. Despite warm temperatures, the fish are still biting, but fish are moving.

The walleyes are really moving right now, not only in lake location, but depth of water as well. Some fish are located on soft bottom areas chasing schools of perch, and some of those fish are suspending and also eating baitfish. Some walleyes are starting to move to the hard bottom areas. Most of the fish on the hard bottom are scattered but some are in pod groups and are willing to bite a leech and bobber presentation. Leeches will be small and limited so get your last batch now! Trolling has been effective to cover water and get the aggressive fish to bite. I have been going faster than normal to catch my fish. It seems like a faster speed is getting the fish to bite right now.

Bluegills are relating to structure and are in big groups on the hard bottom areas in 12-18 feet, or scattered along the weed edges in 10-14 feet. Bobber presentations are working to pull the fish. Crappies are still suspended off of the weeds and can be caught on a small jig and plastic combo. Cast to the edge of the weeds and do a slow lift fall presentation.

Northern pike are really biting right now and are very aggressive. You will find them mixed in with the walleyes. Bright colored baits have triggered lots of pike.

Good luck fishing and remember, introduce someone new into the outdoors. They will appreciate it for a lifetime.
