Rice Lake Fishing Report 7-1-13

The fishing around the area is excellent right now. Pick a species that you want to catch and they are biting. Lots of traffic over the water for the rest of the week might slow that down a little bit as pressure on the fish will increase, both from fisherman, boats and watercraft enjoying the lakes. The Walleyes are still very concentrated in shallow water along the weeds. Depending on the wind, these fish can be found in ten feet, or can be deeper in fourteen to sixteen on a calm water day. The bigger walleyes are starting to move into deeper water, or suspending to chase the baitfish that are hatching as the water warms.

The bluegills are also in the same depth as the walleyes now, as they have started to move out into deeper water as they wrap up their spawning. These fish can be taken on a worm or a small leech under a bobber. Crappies are being found suspended in the water column and some schools are not far from the weed edges, close to the baitfish using the cover in the weeds.  Find your deeper drop offs and fish can be found suspended roaming around feeding. Jigs tipped with live minnows under a bobber works great, just vary your depths in the water column to find the active feeding window.

Good luck fishing, have a fun and safe 4th of July! Remember, introduce someone new into the outdoors, they will appreciate it for a lifetime.
