Rice Lake Fishing Report 06-25-12

Now that the rains have stopped and we have the lake levels up it’s time to fish. Local anglers have been doing well on bass. Many are fishing the weed pockets with plastic worms. Others are pulling a frog or mouse across the lily pads. Be sure to take a three count after the strike before setting the hook.
The smallmouth bass are on the rock piles and humps. Try a slip bobber and a leech or night crawler. If you want to fish with a crankbait, try one that dives deep and let it bump the bottom on the retrieve.
The walleyes have been slow on Red Cedar. The boat traffic during the day has increased and it takes until Wednesday for the lake to clear up from the weekend.
There have been some large bluegills taken on local lakes with a small piece of night crawler on a slip bobber. Work along the outside of the weeds. Some of the fishermen are still using ice jigs to do this.
Several of my friends are waiting until the wind and boat traffic die down to use a fly rod with a popper. This is turning into a lost art. Most fishermen with a fly rod are in the over-fifty set. It takes time to learn the techniques, but once learned, casting seems effortless. Fly fishing is a nice way to think outside the box.
