Rice Lake Fishing Report 9/17/12
By Frank Zumpf, Local Outdoorsman
If you can’t find something to do in the Rice Lake area now you’re just not trying. If you like the outdoors your plate is full. So far this week I’ve been goose hunting, camping, hiking with grandkids and hope to go bird hunting if there’s time.
If fishing is your outdoor activity of choice you’ll be glad to know the northerns and muskies have started to turn on. Try a bucktail and cast it just short of the surface weeds. Be persistent and work all the available cover. Northerns are in the same areas as the muskies.
There have been reports of some great crappie catches using a 2-inch Twister Tail. Work with a light color and switch to a darker tail as it gets later in the evening. If you are fishing in the morning just reverse the color order. The walleyes are still in the weeds, but success has been spotty.
We have about two weeks until the fall colors reach their peak, which can make the view from your fishing boat great. If you can’t get out fishing, how about taking the family out for a ride in the country to enjoy the colors while they last?
