Minocqua Fishing Report 9-11-2012

By Dave Lang

Hi from the shores of Lake Minocqua.  We definitely have the feeling of fall in the air making me think of fall Walleye patterns.  I expect to see Walleyes begin to relate to 2 different patterns depending on the lake.  On lakes that have good rock humps coming out of deep water and topping out at 15-25 feet  Walleyes will begin to congregate on these humps.  On the second set of lakes Walleyes will congregate in the deepest water in the Lake.  Small minnows on light jigs that let you feel the bottom replace weedless jigs, just be sure that you're on the bottom.

This past week I had the pleasure of fishing with Brian Manning of Naperville and his friend Tim Meuller for 3 days. Brian comes up to the Minocqua Area every year the week after Labor Day it was fun to remember some of our previous trips.  Even though we are always fishing the same time on the calender we have had all kinds of fishing including some trips that we found great Walleye action on rock humps.  This year our first day was spent on my favorite Pike lake,we managed a small mixed bag of Pike and Bass but not the action I was looking for.  Day two we hit the Minocqua Chain and our luck took a big step up.  We had a nice mixed bag at the end day.  The strange thing was Pike were absent from our bag, the big fight of the day came when Tim hooked into a big Bowfin(Dog Fish).  I know the Dog Fish is never going to be a part of your bag but I have always said give me one of them on a clients rod and I have a smile on my face "THEY FIGHT".  On day three we returned to the Minocqua Chain and had an even better day than the day before including a couple of nice Pike.  In the 2 days on the chain we caught Pike, a couple big Perch, Largemouth Bass and of course Tim's Dog Fish.  We ended our trip with a shore lunch of fresh caught fish "IT DON'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT". The guys left the next morning heading back to the Chicago area with enough frozen filets for some great fish frys back home with friends and family and some great memories of fishing the Minocqua Chain.

The Pike action in my boat has slowed but I look for it to pickup again with the water cooling down.  As I mentioned with Brian's trip that are always the same date on the calendar the fish don't use the same calendar,it was only a couple of years ago we hammered fall Walleyes same dates.  Watch the water temps and keep changing your tactics to find fish.  That's it for now folks good luck fishin and remember
