Lake Geneva Fishing Report 7/1/13 through 7/8/13
This past week we had an exceptional amount of rainfall. It didn’t bother the fish too much as the fishing continues to be very good. With all the rain, the fish moved slightly shallower. With the warm weather, the surface temperature of the lake is about 75 degrees.
Largemouth bass are now post spawn the best depth is 9-11 feet of water. Look for the fish in Williams Bay or in Trinkes. Some of the bass I caught last week were in excess of 19 inches. Split shot rigged plastics and nightcrawlers produced most of the action. The best color for the plastics is green pumpkin or watermelon seed. The best action has been early in the morning or late in the afternoon. On calm days, the top water bite can also be very good. The best top water bait is a chrome/blue or chrome/black chug bug. Last week, the fish liked a really long pause to initiate the bite.
Lake Trout fishing is starting to heat up. They can be caught trolling spoons and flies. Look for the 100 ft. down in 110 ft. of water. You want to troll the main lake basin at about 1.5 mph. The bite has been all day long right now, but the earlier in the a.m. the more aggressive the bite.
Smallmouth bass still are biting the numbers have been decreasing per trip. Most of the action is in 12-15 ft. of water. I found most of the fish by the weed line by Linn Pier or by Knollwood. There are two approaches to catch them. The first is a split shot rigged nightcrawler and the second is drop shotting a green pumpkin Yum Houdini worm. As the water warms, the fish will become more sporadic while chasing the pods of minnows.Bluegill fishing has been fantastic. I’m catching numbers and very large fish as well. The best depth is 10-11 ft. of water. I’m catching most of the bluegills while I am fishing for largemouth bass. Some of the pumpkin seeds were in excess of 10 inches last week. The best bait for the bigger fish is ½ of a nightcrawler fished on a split shot rig.
Rock bass still remain everywhere. You can basically catch them on anything you cast. Now is the time to take a beginning angler out to show them the love of fishing. The weather is nice, and the action is fast and furious.
Yellow Perch have been good but the overall size has been small. The biggest fish I found is on the weed line by Linn Pier. I caught a few fish over 11 inches last week, but it still takes a lot of sorting. The best approach is ½ of a nightcrawler or leaf worm fished on a split shot rig.
Good luck and I hope to see you on the water. For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 608-883-2050
