Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament
Day One Results — Saturday, July 20, 2013
What Kewaunee and Door County anglers are lacking in numbers of salmon reeled in this year, they’re making up for in size. Just a year after only one 20-pound-plus chinook was put to scale opening day — and 14 in the entire nine-day tournament — 33 20-pound-plus “kings” were put into the official database Saturday.
However, it was the one that didn’t make the cut that was the most talked about fish. A legit 29-pound-plus fish was brought to scale at Sturgeon Bay, but a scanner’s “beep” turned out to be accurate — the fish had a one-pound lead ball in it that made the scale read 30.27. The fish was cut open, the weight discovered, and it was disqualified.
Today — Sunday — dozens of “20s” are coming in (and at least one “30” that we know of), so the leader board is changing fast.
Entry fee is $25 for the nine-day tournament or $13 for a one-day chance. If taking a charter, be sure all others on the boat — including the captain and first mate — have tickets.
First place is $10,000 cash, a free mount of the winning fish by Scott Mansur’s Northland Taxidermy of Algoma and a custom sterling silver chinook salmon ring with a diamond eye by Paul Spanbauer of wisconsincharm.com. Second place is $2,000 cash and a pair of Cannon electric downriggers, and third place is $1,000 cash and a $200 fishing tackle shopping spree at Howie’s Tackle.
In addition to a payout that will go more than 100 places deep, there are daily port prizes worth more than $100 each at all five weigh-in sites in Algoma, Baileys Harbor, Kewaunee, Sturgeon Bay and Washington Island.
Tickets and K/D merchandise are available at Kap’s Marina, 57 Depot, Greystone Castle, Howie’s Tackle, Algoma BP, the Kewaunee Marina and Lakeshore Lighthouse.
