Delavan Lake Fishing Report 6/24/13 through 7/1/13

The boat traffic has been extreme the past week.  The word is out that the fish are biting.  You need to go early to get a good spot.  The fishing has been very good.  The best success has been bluegills and crappies.

Crappie fishing has been very good for the suspended fish in 12 ft of water about 8 ft down.  The best location has been just east of Willow Point or by Browns Channel.  You want to use a 1/64 oz jig head with a purple or chartreuse twister tail.  With the heavy weeds, don’t let it sit on the bottom, swim it slowly back to the boat, keeping the rod tip in constant motion.

Largemouth bass finished their spawn and are slowing moving into their mid summer pattern.  The only problem is that you can’t catch them all over the lake.  They are in small schools and you need to find them.  When you find them, it is no problem to catch many in a short period of time.  They are aggressively hitting split shot rigged nightcrawlers or a wacky rigged Yum Dinger.  The best color in green pumpkin with a 2/0 hook.

Northern Pike action has been improving with the warmer weather.  Currently the bigger the bait the more fish you will catch.  The down poles with a lindy rig ¾ oz sinker and 1/0 hook has been out producing most of the other presentations.  Due to the time of year, the bait really matters.  The bigger the bait the more fish you will catch, look for 8-9 inch suckers for the most action.  Lakeside Bait and Tackle has an ample supply of the larger bait.

Bluegill action has been simply fantastic in the 14-16 ft depth range.  The fish can be caught using leaf worms straight beneath the boat with a single hook and split shot.  The best location has been by Del Mar or just east of Willow Point.  A lot of large fish are being caught, the size has been improving over the last several years.

Good luck and I hope to see you on the water.  For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 608-883-2050
