A nice Wisconsin River walleye | Alex Hansen with a nice smallmouth bass | Dave Hansen with a nice smallmouth bass |
Even with the hot temperatures this past week the bite has been good for most species of fish. The walleye bite has been good with nice catches from deeper water on jigs tipped with crawlers and leeches. The action for bass continues to be good with some very nice fish being caught on jig and plastics and on top water baits. Panfish remain very active and continue to get better and better as it gets warmer out. Most of our action has been taking place from deep water structure in 10 to 14 feet of water with some of the crappies holding over even deeper water. The musky bite is starting to pick up but most of the action remains during very low light periods with some after dark activity. Top water baits and bucktails continue to be the most consistent producers but a few fish have been coming on jerkbaits like Suicks and Phantoms.

A couple of nice photos from one of my bear baiting stations. |
With the start of the 2013 bear season only a couple of days away now is the time to make sure that all stands are set and you have chosen your primary location to harvest your bear. We are still seeing good activity at all of our stations and with season nearly upon us it is really important to mix up the types of attractants we are using for bait to keep the bears coming in regularly. One other important note is now that it is close to season don't change your routine of baiting. Kkeep it the same because by now the bears have you patterned and are more than likely waiting for you to bring them their next meal.
Have a great week,
Phil Schweik
