Ashland Area Fishing Report 8-21-2012

By Captain Jim Hudson

In the “Bay” itself, smallmouth are starting to binge feed pretty good,” said Captain Jim Hudson, referring to Chequamegon. “The days are getting shorter and this triggers the fish to start putting on the pounds to make it through their long winter. Now, the extreme binge eating won’t start until the water gets colder, but, the fish have been very cooperative.”

“Focus attention to the Rock Pile, Breakwall, Long Island and the many thriving weed areas throughout the bay and you will be set to catch some great fish. The crankbait bite is okay right now, as is the tube bite. Lively minnows or a lively nightcrawler or leech always tempt these massive fish into biting. Walleyes have been biting very good. Also, trolling for walleyes, we have picked up some very nice pike - always nice to see!”

In the Islands, Captain Hudson said, Lake Trout is still the name of the game but more west winds are needed. The water temps, especially down temps are just not good for this time of year. In areas of 100 feet of water, he said water temps are in the 50's. Winds are needed to push the warm water out and start to cool down the water column.

“But, we are still catching fish, targeting areas in the outer perimeter of the islands,” he said.   Each area is different for the temp breaks in the column, but, we are always looking for water that is 45 degrees or cooler. The fish will move up and feed in water warmer than this, but, they hate to stick around in it. Stay tuned...the salmon should be coming in soon!”
