Ashland Area Fishing Report 9-21-12

There are reports of Smallmouth still biting at the Rock Pile and the Shore end of the Break Wall. (for location information call Anglers All Bait Shop at 715-682-5754). Anglers are finding Walleyes in the Bay, using stickbaits and walleye suckers. There are plenty of Salmon and Trout out there right now so fishing should be great, especially this weekend when the weather report predicts the wind will start dying down. The wind has been playing havoc with the boaters going out in the Bay so not too much fishing has been going on the last couple of days. The bass are always biting. Typically the fishing should remain the same for the next couple of weeks, REALLY GOOD!!!!

Brrrrr.. Who turned off the heat? Well, whoever did, THANK YOU!! We are grateful to feel this first push of fall here to the area, and we think the fish are too!! Amazing, with a bit of wind and cool weather, how things can change. So, that is what this report is all about - the change that is coming for our fall season. And, as you can see from the video posting above, we are EXCITED!
Water temps have dropped into the mid-60's in Chequamegon Bay itself and even a little lower in other spots in the islands. Great to see, and we hope to see if get lower and lower as we get closer to October. The cooler the temps, the better the fishing, in our minds anyhow. But, with the falling temps, watch for fishing patterns to shift a bit, especially with warmer water species, like Smallmouth and Walleye.
For Smallmouth, you will start to see glimpses of them binge feeding more and more heavily, and fishing moving out into a deeper water. Once the water hits into the 50's, this will be much more pronounced, but, its already happening, as I am starting to see a lot more fish show up into areas that are known to hold them in the fall period. But, still a lot of fish holding in shallower weed beds and on the shallow side of the Rock Pile as well. Livebait is still ruling for the most part, but, that will change as well. Mix it up now, throwing some crankbaits, rattlebaits and jerkbaits. Fish will start to key in on those more and more in the next few weeks.
Lake Trout we only have a few more days to get our last licks on them. Same ol story and same ol spots. Nothing new there. Salmon, trickling in, but, not huge numbers yet. Again, next week is usually the real start of the Coho population to show up. Most fish are moving right now, I do believe. Some fish in the creeks, including Browns. But, more will show up as time passes on.
