Root River Report update

Root River Report

Root river station

The following information is the latest fishing information for the Root River in Racine. We will post new information to this site every TUESDAY or WEDNESDAY at 4:00 pm from September through December and from March through May. We will also update the number of fish processed at the Root River Steelhead Facility to give you the exact number of fish passed upstream. Depending on water conditions and number of fish in the weir, fish are usually processed on Mondays and Thursdays.

In addition, you can check out our Lake Michigan Outdoor Report for the latest fishing information on Lake Michigan and Green Bay.

Root River Steelhead Facility

Lake Michigan trout and salmon don't successfully reproduce in Wisconsin streams, so DNR gives Mother Nature a hand. Watch fisheries crews collect eggs and milt from spawning fish to create the next generation of steelhead to challenge anglers.

Root River Fishing Report for September 16, 2019

Water levels on the river rose drastically after last week's rainstorm, but flows have dropped back down and the river is fishable. The water temperature in the river was about 67 degrees by the end of the week.

Fishing Information

There was not much fishing activity along the Root River throughout the week. The few anglers reported at the beginning of the week were mainly targeting Smallmouth, but then they switched their focus to King salmon by the end of the week. The few anglers who were fishing the river did have some luck. A few Smallmouth were caught as well as a few Kings. The Kings were caught using fly fishing tackle. Other baits, like spawn and spoons, were used as well but proved to be unsuccessful.

The facility was fired up for the season on Monday September 16th.  At the time, flows on the Root River were very high (over 1400 cfs).  Today, flows are around 150cfs.  The water temperature in the weir is still very warm (67 degrees F).
