Rice Lake Fishing 5/20/14
The water is starting to warm up with the nicer weather we have been having. The forecast looks great, and this coming week of fishing should really heat up.
When the water hits the 50 degree mark, it seems the fish really start to turn on. That includes both largemouth and smallmouth bass, as they prepare for the spawning season. The fish need to bulk up their weight, and this can really work in a fisherman's favor. The fish will congregate adjacent to spawning areas. A great way to target these fish is with minnow imitations as the water warms and your baitfish start to move shallow as well. Casting husky jerks, or floating rapalas are great choices.
The walleyes have concluded with spawning and are moving out off of the shoreline. With that said, many fish can still be found and caught on the shorelines in the morning and evening when they come up to feed. Casting jigs and slip bobbers are a good way to catch fish in an area you know holds fish. If you are looking to cover water, cast a husky jerk onto the rocks and hard bottom, as you will find the fish being more aggressive now. The windblown shorelines are good areas to hit as the fish will congregate into the shallower water and are in a good feeding frenzy.
Good luck fishing and remember, introduce someone new into the outdoors. They will appreciate it for a lifetime.
