Price County Winter Trail Reports 3-7-18

Price County snowmobile trails are in good condition. We received approximately 4-6 inches of snow Monday night (3/5) into Tuesday (3/6). The trails have a good base in most areas. Corners are getting icy, bare spots are starting to show in some areas, approaches to road crossings are becoming bare, and road routes are bare. During March, conditions can improve or deteriorate quickly. Detailed reports from snowmobile club trail reporters are posted below upon receipt.

Some Price County trails are on private land. The use of the private land is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. Please stay on marked trails, especially across fields. There have been many complaints from landowners due to snowmobilers not staying on the trail and riding all over their fields. To avoid having these TRAILS CLOSED, PLEASE respect the private land that is open to snowmobiling and stay on marked trails.

Several miles of trail are open for winter ATV and UTV riding including the Flambeau Trail System, Solberg Trail, and Georgetown Trail. The Price County portion of the Pine Line Rail Trail (Prentice to Ogema), Snowmobile Trail 189 (Ogema to Timm’s Hill), and Snowmobile Trails 116, 181 and 118 (Prentice area loop) are also open to winter ATV and UTV riding when the trail is officially open to snowmobile use and the temperature is  28 degrees or colder.

Sno-Drovers (northeast Price County / Pike Lake Chain area) – 03/06/18 -  The Trails in the Pike Lake Chain area are still in good to very good condition on 90% of the trails. They are beginning to get bare spots on the corners and where the sun is most intense.Trail 101 has the most traffic and has most impacted by the direct sun, especially from the chain to the Oneida County Line, near the iron bridge west of the chain and west of Wintergreen Road.

Northwoods Hi-Riders (Solberg Lake area / northeast of Phillips / central Price County) - 03/07/18-

The 3-4" of new snow we received in the Solberg Lake area Monday night and Tuesday has helped to cover some of the bare and brown areas and has helped with the grooming. There continues to be good snow cover in the wooded and shaded areas. Cold temperatures last night has firmed up the base so there is still good riding out there. We are continuing to groom the trails. The season is not over yet. Conditions however could change quickly with warmth and sun. Roadways and road crossings will still be pretty much bare.

Lugerville Chasers (west of Phillips / west central Price County) - 03/07/18 -

Our trails are in good condition.  Expect bare and icy spots.  Stay away from logging and roadways. Please use caution on Trail 88 between Crane Chase Road and Soo Lake as there is a logging operation in progress and there may logging equipment & trucks on the trail throughout the snowmobile season.

Chaparrals (city of Phillips and south on Trail #102 / east of Phillips - Trails 12 & 173) - 02/28/18 - Trail #102 was groomed last night and turned out almost perfect. Some areas of Trail #102, Trail #112 and Trail #161 will be groomed Thursday. Even with the warmer temperatures predicted for this week, the trails should be perfect for the coming weekend. Road crossing and road routes are bare.

Bushbenders (Prentice, Brantwood, Ogema, and Spirit areas / southeast Price County) - 03/06/18 -

We got roughly 6 in of snow in southern Price County last night. We are out grooming daily. Trails should be in very good condition.

Please stay on the trails, especially across the fields where they are marked "Stay on Trail". We have had a lot of complaints by landowners because of snowmobiles not staying on the trail and riding all over their fields, which can damage their crops. Have fun and drive safe!

Elk River Pioneers (Soo Lake area / west central Price County) - 03/06/18 - Should be in good shape after the snow! Groomers will be out Wednesday and done by Friday.

Bushwackers (east of Park Falls & Fifield / north central Price County) - 03/01/18 -

All Bushwacker’s  trails are groomed and are in good condition. There are some bare spots and trails are losing base. Grooming has been taking place most of nights to beat temperatures.

Driftsplitters (Catawba-Kennan area / southwest Price County) - 03/07/18 -
No current report.

Sno-Gypsies (west of Park Falls / Tuscobia / northwest Price County) - 03/07/18 - No current report.

Cross-Country Ski, Snowshoe, Skijor & Fat Tire Bike Trail Report - 3/5/18

The trails are reported to be in excellent to poor condition. The trails may be soft or icy due to fluctuating temps. The trails are groomed and tracked as needed or as conditions permit. Detailed reports from silent sports trail reporters are posted below upon receipt.

Only cross-country skiers are allowed to use the groomed/tracked portions of the winter silent sports trails. Other recreational users (snowshoe, skijor, and fat tire bike) are welcome to use the portion of trail that is not groomed/tracked. Activities vary by trail.

High Point Trail - (classic xc-ski, snowshoe, skijor & fat tire bike) - 02/23/18 - The trail will be groomed this afternoon or tomorrow morning for the weekend. We got a LOT of new snow last night. For information on lighted night skiing, call 715-767-5287.

Holy Cross Trail - (classic xc-ski, snowshoe, skijor & fat tire bike) - 03/06/18 - Now that we are getting new snow, I may try and set some new track later this week (Thursday) at Holy Cross Ski area.  Last Thursday I groomed and set track at Holy Cross.  The track was thin in most places due to the freezing and thawing of the trail during the 40 degree days.  Hopefully with the new snow I can groom and get some track set.

Newman Springs Trail - (classic xc-ski, snowshoe, & fat tire bike) – 03/07/18 -  We received approximately 4 inches of snow Monday/Tuesday.  The CNNF staff member is in training this week and grooming will not occur. Enjoy the fresh snow!

Phillips School Forest Trail - (Skate & Classic XC-Ski Trail) - 03/06/18 - The trail was groomed and tracked this afternoon, conditions are very good.Snowshoe & Fat Bike Trail 3-7-18 - This single track trail was left alone last week due to the warm weather. A little fresh snow and cooler temperatures this week allowed us to re-groom the trails last night. The trails are back in great shape and should remain that way through at least Sunday.  After the weekend we'll be back to the regular scheduled program of thawing.

Squaw Creek / Solberg Lake Trail - (classic xc-ski, snowshoe, skijor & fat tire bike) - 03/06/18 - With the additional 3-4" of snow we received Monday/Tuesday, the trail cleaned up nicely and is in great shape. With the thick base and cooler temperatures the trail should hold up well through the weekend.

Timm's Hill Trail - (skate & classic xc-ski, snowshoe, skijor, & fat tire bike) - 03/02/18 - The trail was groomed and tracked today, and it is in excellent condition with a 16 inch trail base.
