Phillips Area Fishing Report
Most of the area rivers and streams have opened up with the recent runoff during our abnormal warm temps. All of the dams on the Elk river system have good amounts of water moving thru them and high current areas of the areas flowages like the Phillips Chain, Musser and Soo lakes have started to open. The South Fork of the Flambeau river is wide open and over its banks with spring run off. The North Fork above Big Bear is mostly open except for the small Flowages around Park Falls, From Big Bear down there is a good amount of ice yet covering the slack water areas.
This hasn't stopped late season Ice Anglers from heading out on area lakes, Anglers that are braving the declining ice conditions are finding a good Crappie bite but extreme caution must be taken when traveling on the ice. Most of the Crappie are either being taken on Tip Downs with a Minnow or by jigging plastics like ratsos and shrimpos. If you feel you must venture out on the ice I recommend that you fish with a partner and have the proper safety equipment like ropes, floatation devices, a spud bar to find rotten ice and carry some type of ice picks with you so you can pull yourself from the ice if you fall in. Personally I'm using this time to put away my ice gear and get ready for some open water fishing!

“The goodness of a person and of the society he or she lives in often comes down to very simple things and words found in the Scout Law. Every society depends on trust and loyalty, on courtesy and kindness, on bravery and reverence. These are the values of Scouting, and these are the values of Americans.”
President George W. Bush
