Follow up: Day 3 sturgeon spearing harvest report

Attention Winnebago System sturgeon spearing enthusiasts:

For starters, I’ve been informed that I forgot to send the daily harvest summary sheet showing how many fish were registered at each station. So I have attached that summary to this email.

You may remember that last season I chronicled some past sturgeon spearing seasons (1957, 1967, 1977, and 1987).  This season I plan to chronicle some of the seasons ending in 8.

Sturgeon Vignette – “The 1958 sturgeon spearing season”

It’s always interesting to read through these documents and see what changed over the past 60 years.  A couple of things jumped out to me as I was reviewing these documents:

  1. There was a spearing season open on Little lake Butte des Morts
  2. The minimum length limit was 40”
  3. 1.3% of the harvest was fish > 100 pounds (through 3 days 7.0% of the Lake Winnebago harvest and 3.8% of the Upriver Lakes harvest has been fish larger than 100 pounds)
  4. There was not a license required, but you needed to pay $1.00 to have a tag to lock on the tail immediately upon harvest
  5. There were 8 registration stations, 3 of which are still in operation (Waverly Beach, Stockbridge, and Calumet Harbor (Pipe)
  6. There was not a registration station between Oshkosh and Pipe.  Our Wendt’s station is there now and this is one of our busier stations year in and year out.

We are committed to service excellence.

Visit our survey at http://dnr.wi.gov/customersurvey to evaluate how I did.
