MADISON, Wis. (DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES NEWS RELEASE) -- The Washburn County Sheriff’s Department and the Department of Natural Resources are recommending no vehicle travel on area lakes due to poor ice conditions. In the last week three vehicles have broken through the ice while traveling on Nancy, Pokegama and Gilmore lakes. All occupants of those vehicles got out safely. Anyone venturing onto the ice this winter is urged to use extra caution. 12/30/13
1/8/14 - Reported by AAA Sports
Cold weather has put only the really hardy fisherman out there on the lakes.
This coming weekend looks really great.
Spooner Lake is plowed out as far as the island and a few side "roads" as well.
5/7/14 - Reported by Long Lake Bait and Tackle
Here's a report for Long Lake. Ice just went off the entire lake late yesterday. Water temps are at about 42 degrees. Had some reports of a few bass and northern for opener, but that's about it right now. Water's still a bit chilly, but we headed up!
5/7/14 - Reported by Stone Lake Bait and Tackle
It was a slow start to the opener what with most lakes having just enough ice to make things a little inconvenient. Although we had reports of a good walleye bite using fatheads in 15-18 feet with a slip bobber. Recent reports are of most lakes, with the exception of Grindstone, Round and Lac Courte Orielles, are free of any ice now. The water temps are ranging from 47-51 degrees. It's still a little cold for leeches to be very effective as well as night crawlers. Minnows are the bait of choice at this point in time. Good fishing!
