Diet Research and Winnebago Sturgeon

Dear Winnebago System Sturgeon Enthusiasts:

Given the talk about the below average sturgeon condition (plumpness) this year, I wanted to get some more information out to you about the diet work and forage availability research that our fisheries crew conducts to track trends in foraging behavior of our lake sturgeon.  Below is a link to a vignette that I drafted describing some of the assessments that we do and also some of the interesting results. As described in the vignette, I have also attached a copy of a paper by Stelzer et al. (2008) that describes the initial stable isotope project conducted on Winnebago System lake sturgeon.  I hope to have a part 2 to this story in the coming days that will describe the overall impact of gizzard shad on fish condition and the harvest of 100+ pound fish.  So stay tuned!
