Dave Duwe Lake Geneva Fishing Report 8/11/14 through 8/18/14

The overall bite on Lake Geneva has slowed a bit for the game fish.  Presently the bluegill bite has been phenomenal.  The water continues to be cooler than normal and the deep water schooling smallmouth bite hasn’t really started yet.  If you can find schools of minnows, the bass will be right behind them.  They are difficult to find however.

The largemouth bass bite has been average.  The best depth of water is 18-22 ft of water.  Look for the fish by Trinkes, Gage Marine and by the 700 club.  They can be caught either on a split shot rigged nightcrawler or dragging a Carolina rig in the scattered weeds with hard bottom.

Bluegill action is fantastic.  It is possible to catch 50-100 fish in a short time.  The bigger bluegills are in 21-23 ft of water.  Look for the fish by Elgin Club or by the old Military Academy.    I found this week that the bigger fish prefer the bigger bait so I’ve been using a full nightcrawler for the best action.

Smallmouth bass fishing has been sporadic.  I’ve been picking up one here and there but I was unable to find schooling fish last week.  The best depth is 21-27 ft of water.  I’ve been using lindy rigged nightcrawlers right on bottom.  Look for the fish by Gage Marine and Fontana Beach.

Lake Trout are still being picked up in the main lake basin.  After speaking with several people, it seems that the fish are in shallower than normal water depth.  It seems as though a lot of big fish are being caught in 70-90 ft of water half way down the water column.  Fish for the Lake Trout in front of Yerkes Observatory.

Good luck and I hope to see you on the water.  For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 608-883-2050
