Dave Duwe Lake Geneva 9/1/14 through 9/8/14

Fishing remains slower than normal for this time of year.  The tight schools of smallmouth are few and far between.  Hopefully after the Labor Day holiday and the pace of the pleasure boat decreases, the overall success for anglers will increase.

Smallmouth bass fishing has been slower than normal the entire summer.  A successful trip is between 3 and 5 fish.  I’ve been concentrating in depths of 20-22 ft of water.  Most of the success is coming on lindy rigs tipped with a nightcrawler.  The best location has been by Fontana Beach, the Yacht club or by Gage Marine.

Largemouth bass fishing has been slow as well.  The best success is coming on main lake points and the Trinkes flat.   The best depth has been 18-20 ft of water.  The best presentation is Carolina rigging green pumpkin lizards or dragging football head jigs with root beer colored Chompers.  You can still catch fish on spit shot rigged nightcrawlers as well.  In the early morning hours when there are bait fish in the shallow waters, the top water bite has been very good.  Chug bugs or Pop-R’s have been producing most of the action.

Northern Pike fishing has been improving now that a weak thermocline has formed.  The best success is coming in 30-35 ft of water.  Lindy rigged chubs or medium suckers have been producing most of the action.  The best locations have been by Fontana Beach or just east of Cedar Point.

Bluegill fishing has been very good outside the weedline in 18-20 ft of water.  The bigger fish are being caught on nightcrawlers fished straight beneath the boat.  You want to place the bait about 6 inches above bottom.  The biggest catches have been coming by Elgin Club or by Gage Marine.

Walleye fishing has been good at night with a few sporadic fish mixed in during the daytime hours.  The ones I’ve caught during the day have been on lindy rigged suckers fished right on bottom.  The nighttime bite remains best on large Rapala’s trolled in about 15 ft of water.

Good luck and I hope to see you on the water.  For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 608-883-2050
