Dave Duwe Delavan Lake fishing report 7/28/14 through 8/4/14

Fishing has improved over previous weeks.  Like, Lake Geneva, I’m having a hard time with active Northern Pike but everything else is biting substantially better.

This past week with the cooler weather the largemouth bass moved tighter to shore.  My best depth was 6-8 ft of water.  I’ve been catching them on top water lures or using a Thill big fish slip bobber with a medium sucker positioned 1 ft above the weeds.  The best locations are where there are sand pockets in the weed flats.  Look for the fish west of Willow Point and by Assembly Park.

Smallmouth bass have started to show up again.  I’ve been catching them, like the largemouth in shallower water on suckers fished beneath a slip bobber.  There is no exact location, I’ve been picking them up here and there.  The only pattern I’ve found is scattered weeds and a hard bottom.

Bluegill action has been very good in the 15-20 ft depth range.  You want to use leaf worms on a split shot rig straight beneath the boat.  The key to the presentation is a lighter split shot so the worm falls more naturally.  The neutral buoyancy of the presentation will create more bites.  The best location I’ve found is by Assembly Park and the weedline west of Willow Point.

Walleye fishing has been spotty.  The best action for the walleyes has been in the evening or during the overnight hours.  Leeches fished on a weed jig or casting or trolling medium diving crankbaits along the weedline has been producing the most action.  The best crankbait color for me has   been pearl or fire tiger.  The best location has been by the gray condos or the north shore from the Yacht Club to Willow Point.  Look for them in 12-15 ft of water.

Northern Pike action has been spotty.  On my Hummingbird locator they are very easy to spot but are still very hard to catch.  One day I fished 2 hours exclusively for them and never got a bite.  I’m not sure what to use to get them to bite.

Good luck and I hope to see you on the water.  For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 608-883-2050
