Dave Duwe Delavan Lake Report 9/22/14 through 9/29/14

Delavan Lake remains pretty spotty.  The best bite on the lake remains the bluegills.  The smallmouth are starting to heat up though.  The boat traffic on the lake is almost non-existent.

Bluegill fishing has been very good in the 13-15 ft depth range or suspended  the main lake basin 15 ft down in 40 ft of water.  The suspended fish can be caught off of the Yacht Club point or the Village Supper Club point.  The fish are 15-20 ft down over 40 ft of water.  For the shallower pan fish, they are tight to the weed edge.  Look for the fish by 3 flags or just west of the Yacht Club.  The best presentation is a small split shot with a leaf worm or red worm.

The second best bite  on the lake is the smallmouth bass.  They are starting to school up in the 14-15 ft depth range.  They are being caught just west of the Yacht club and east of Browns Channel.  They are being caught on small suckers  or split shot rigged nighcrawlers.  The average size of the fish is 13-15 inches.  When you catch one fish there will be others around, so stay in the same area.

Northern Pike action has been spotty.  I’ve been catching some fish in less than 10 ft of water and others in greater than 18 ft of water.  The deep fish are being caught on lindy rigged suckers and the shallow fish are being caught on slip bobber rigs.  The best bait size has been medium to large suckers.  Look for them east of Browns Channel or by Willow Point.

Walleye fishing has started to improve with the cooler water.  Most of the fish are being caught on jigging Rapala’s.  The best bait color is chrome and blue and the size should be medium; #5 or #7.  Look for the fish by Delmar, Belvidere Park or by the Village Supper Club.

The Crappies are starting to suspend off the weedline in 20-25 ft of water.  They are aggressively chasing small shiners.  The best location has been west of the Yacht Club or by Belvidere condos.  The best approach to catching them is small purple or chartreuse plastics fished on a 1/32 oz jig head.

Good luck and I hope to see you on the water.  For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 608-883-2050
