Courtesy Copy: Opening day sturgeon spearing harvest report: follow up

Attention Winnebago System Sturgeon Spearing Enthusiasts:

In addition to the information included in the primary report that was just mailed, I wanted to add a story line to this season's opening day.  After all, it is the people, and the social aspects of sturgeon spearing that make this a truly special sport.  Some folks may know that a spearer who is awarded an Upriver Lakes spearing permit can transfer their tag to a youth spearer age 12-17.  Today I was made aware of a special situation where John Woods transferred his Upriver Lakes permit to his 13 year old grandson Alex Woods.  The paper work was sent in on January 1, 2018 and John passed away on January 8.  I think I can safely say that Alex would have made his grandfather proud today as he speared a 56 inch, 47 pound sturgeon!  I have included a photo of the Alex (right) along with his father Matt (left) and uncle Andy (middle). Congratulations to the Woods family and thank you for carrying on the family spearing tradition!

We are committed to service excellence.

Visit our survey at http://dnr.wi.gov/customersurvey to evaluate how I did.
