Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report
With the recent rain and cooler weather the water temperatures have dropped significantly and they are now in the upper 30 to lower 40 degree range. The cooler water temperatures have triggered the fall bite and the fishing this past week has been phenomenal. We have been catching lots of nice walleyes and crappies along with some very nice muskies.
In addition to the great fishing the colder weather has the deer moving a lot more than in the past weeks and with the rut about to start things are looking very good for a successful season.
Most of our fishing has been on the Wisconsin River and its backwater areas along with some fishing taking place on local lakes. We are targeting water depths of 12 to 18 FOW for the walleyes and crappies and 8 to 20 FOW for the muskies depending on the time of the day.
For the walleyes we are running lead head jigs tipped with fathead minnows and we are fishing them right on the bottom. The crappies have been suspended so running slip-bobbers set at various depths has been producing well for us. For the muskies we have been running a variety of baits from Suicks and Bulldawgs to large crankbaits. We have also been running a variety of larger musky sized suckers on quick-set rigs that we have set out behind the boat.
Have a great week,
Phil Schweik
