Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report

It has been a rather cool week for August but that is not a bad thing especially with bear baiting and the start of bear season right around the corner.  The cooler weather has also jump started the fishing this past week and we are seeing more activity while on the water.

We are having a lot of activity right now at our bear baiting stations and you can see from the photos that there are some pretty good sized bears coming in as well.  We are regularly baiting our locations right now to establish a pattern for the bears to follow and get used to.  What we want to do is get the bears accustomed to us being there at the same time every day so when we go in to hunt them they are on a set routine.

On Wisconsin Outdoors

Fishing this past week was good for a variety of species but the two that stand out are musky and walleye. With the cooler weather this past week the water temperature dropped a good 10 degrees and it is now in the low 70’s where it was in the low 80’s last week.

Musky action picked up and we saw considerable action on Bucktails, jerkbaits and top water lures.  Most of the action was early and late in the day but we did have consistent action during the daytime hours when it was cloudy out.

The walleye bite was good all week long with very good action early and late in the day. The most productive method was working a jig and crawler along break lines in 8 to 12 feet of water.

With the cooler temperatures we had this past week a person starts thinking about fall and with that said it is never too early to start thinking about boat maintenance.  Right now is a great time to schedule that fall maintenance and check-up for your boat before winter storage.  Don’t procrastinate and wait until the last minute, give Jerry Clinton a call at Amherst Marine to schedule your winterization today.

Have a great week,

Phil Schweik
