Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report

“Headlines” The Stevens Point area will host some of the nation's best collegiate anglers this weekend as part of the 2015 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship, which is presented by Bass Pro Shops.

This event is being hosted by the Stevens Point Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, and it will be held July 9-11 on Lake DuBay and on the Wisconsin River.  This will be the first Wisconsin location to host the national championship, which will include 85 teams.

Teams qualify for the championship through a series of conference regional tournaments that began in January.  At the national championship, the entire field competes on the first two days. On the third day the field is trimmed to the top five teams catching the heaviest cumulative five-bass daily limits.

Following the championship round, members of the top four teams compete individually in the Carhartt College Series Classic Bracket presented by Bass Pro Shops for three more days. The top college angler in the Classic bracket competition earns an invitation to compete with the world's top professional bass anglers in the 2016 Bassmaster Classic on Grand Lake near Tulsa, Oklahoma

Takeoffs for the championship will be held at Tiki Beach Bar and Grill, 1126 County Road DB in Mosinee. Weigh-ins will be at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus at Colman Field, 2100 Maria Drive.

The championship, like all Carhartt Bassmaster College Series events, will be aired on the ESPNU network.

With that said the collegiate anglers should find a good Smallmouth bite with consistent action by casting crankbaits and top water baits in heavy current areas with rocks and timber, as well as working shoreline structure and rock humps in the main lake sections.

The musky bite is still going strong with a great early morning and evening bite going on right now. Another Giant fish came in this past week by good friend Brad Wirt of Wausau with another 50+ inch fish from the Central Wisconsin area.

Walleyes have been very consistent with consistent action by working a jig and minnow in submerged wood in 4 to 8 feet of water.

The Panfish bite was extremely good this past week with lots of nice crappies and bluegills being caught.  The bluegills are still holding in the weeds but the crappie’s can be found either suspended out over deeper water or holding in tight to submerged wood structure in 4 to 8 feet of water.
