Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report
Things are finally starting to settle down here in central Wisconsin. The water temperatures are now in the mid to upper 60’s and the conditions are starting to stabilize on our rivers and streams.
Walleye anglers are finding fish in both shallow and deep water locations and this is typical of post spawn fish. Walleyes typically scatter after spawning and can be found just about anywhere, the key to finding and catching these fish is using your electronics and locating structure as. It may be wood, rocks or even concrete from a bridge or dam but rest assured the fish will be there. Using your electronics will not only help you locate some of the underwater structure, it can at times help you see individual fish hidden in and around the structure especially if you have a locator with side-imaging.
For you panfish guys the crappies are starting to make a push towards shallower traditional spawning locations. These locations are typically downed wood, bulrushes, docks, or any other type of submerged structure in less than 6 feet of water. Targeting crappies can be fun and simple for all ages. I like to run a medium light to light action rod and reel combination set up with a small bobber and either a jig with live bait or small plastics. For plastics check out the new Jig–Shot plastics by Elk River Rods in the 2 inch swim fry they are unbelievable.
A few guys have been out targeting bass and at this time of the year they can be plentiful and easy to catch. Simply locate some shallow rocks on the river system and rest assured that if you target enough locations you will find some good fish. I like to start out with jigs tipped with either live bait or plastics but often times run crankbaits or even top water baits at this time of the year.
With the southern musky opener starting we have been seeing a few guys catching some nice muskies already. Most of the fish have been coming on bucktails but a few fish have been taken on top water baits as well as some twitch baits.
Have a great week,
Phil Schweik
