Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report
We have been on quite a roller coaster so far this spring and it doesn’t look like it is going to change anytime soon. Weather conditions continue to fluctuate on a daily basis and that is creating perfect conditions for a long drawn out spawning season.
With all the rain we have been receiving the water levels are remaining high and the current is fast. With the cooler than normal weather that we have been receiving the water temperatures are slowly crawling their way up but it is taking a long time and that is a very good scenario for anglers. Water temperatures as of Friday may 10th are averaging around 50 to 55 degrees in central Wisconsin.
With that said the walleye fishing remains very good but we are now seeing quite a few of the smaller males and females as opposed to catching more of the larger fish like we were last week. The walleyes have moved out of their traditional spawning grounds and are now either transitioning to their summer haunts or they are already there. You may still find a few stragglers hanging around in the spawning areas but the vast majority of the walleyes have left and moved on.
As the water temperature continue to rise the crappies and white bass will start to make a push towards their spawning locations and we are already seeing some of that taking place. Just this past week we were able to locate and find a few locations that were holding some good numbers of both white bass and crappies. The only issue is that with the weather conditions the way they have been you cannot count on the fish staying in one location very long as the weather changes the water temperature changes and the fish move out. It is a critical part of the process in early spring spawning locations.
The southern musky opener started out with some nice fish being caught mostly on bucktails but a few nice fish were caught on twitch baits and rubber. I had one angler from Kansas City hook into a very large musky last week while we were walleye fishing. After a long battle on 8 pound test line we slid the net under an upper 40’s fish that absolutely made his day!
Have a great week,
