Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report

On Wisconsin Outdoors

We have had great walleye action this past week in both Central Wisconsin and on Green Bay and its tributaries.  The BIG Lake has been producing numbers of large fish that average 26 to 30 inches long!!!  The river has been producing heavy numbers of fish in the 14 to 18 inch range with a few surpassing the 20 inch mark.

Most of the action on the big lake has been by long-line trolling crankbaits in 4 to 12 feet of water.  There are also a few guys out there casting crankbaits for the walleyes and they are tossing Rapala Rippin Raps, and Shad Raps, in the higher concentration areas, like feeder mouths and stream inlets.  The big key to finding and staying with the walleyes on Green Bay is to use your electronics and watch for slight temperature changes and contour breaks.  Once temperature changes or contour breaks are located, mark the position on your locators mapping page with the GPS.  The Humminbird 1199 Si works very well here at finding those precise locations.   Finding warmer water really was the key to our success on Green Bay.

The local Wisconsin River “river rats” are pounding away with jig and minnow combinations and tossing three-way rigs in heavy current areas for feeding walleyes.  Most of the action has been during low light periods but a few guys are sticking it out during the mid-day hours and they are picking up a few “extra” fish.

With the weather warming up don’t be surprised if you start seeing a few nice smallmouth starting to pop up while you’re out walleye fishing.  We had a few nice smallies last week,  and with warmer weather in the forecast the bass are really going to start to turn the feedbag on.

The 2015 turkey season is under way and hunters taking to the woods should be in for a prosperous hunt.  With very respectable number of birds this spring and almost hunting perfect conditions, hunters taking to the woods should find ample opportunities at finding and tagging that tom.
