Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report

Open water fishing has begun and anglers are lining up below area dams and spillways targeting early spring walleyes.  Ice fishing continues to be very good in most areas of the state, but please use caution when heading out. At this time of the year the ice conditions can vary greatly and they can change on a daily basis, even hourly in some locations.

On Wisconsin Outdoors

With that said we are seeing very good catches of crappies, perch, and bluegills. Most of the action is taking place in shallow areas of the lakes with good green weeds. Interestingly though we are seeing a strange development where the larger panfish seem to be preferring smaller baits.  Typically when you are fishing you think big bait – big fish, but this past week has been just the opposite where we are seeing a distinct liking for microscopic sized lures to get the larger fish.

On Wisconsin Outdoors

As far as open water goes, anglers are fishing with standard jig and minnow combinations in deep water below dams, but a few savvy anglers are heading down river to traditional pre-spawn locations. These hearty anglers are picking up some of the “nicer” walleyes before they make their way upstream to their spawning grounds.  By the way if you are looking for a new walleye rod, check out the new “Gold Series” rods by Elk River Custom Rods in Phillips, Wisconsin. You can’t beat them!

I know it’s early but I have been seeing quite a few strutting turkeys this past week, and interestingly enough I have also heard some of them gobbling.  Yes gobbling….  Get ready, because it really isn’t that far out and turkey season will be upon us.

Have a great week,
