Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report
Ice conditions in Central Wisconsin are very good with an average of 14 to 18 inches of good solid ice on most lakes with little snow cover making travel and access very good. Further north we are encountering lakes with lots of snow cover and several inches of deep slush making for difficult travel conditions.
The fishing has been good for all species on local lakes with most of our fishing centering on the Wisconsin River System and its backwater areas.
Walleyes have been biting well during low light hours and after dark on tip-ups baited up with golden shiners and medium sized sucker minnows. Most of the action is taking place in shallow mud flats with less than 4 feet of water under the ice. Northern pike have been very aggressive and the action has been outstanding to say the least. Fish averaging in the upper 20’s and lower 30’s have been our average with some larger northern pike topping out at almost 40 inches. Most of the action has been associated with large sand flats in 3 to 6 feet of water running tip-ups baited up with large golden shiners. Panfish action continues to be our bread and butter. We are catching a lot of nice crappies, bluegills and perch. A lot of these fish are migrating throughout the system so you have to do your homework to find them. But if you can get on a good school of them you can be in for some great action.
Have a great week,
Phil Schweik
