Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report

On Wisconsin Outdoors

The past few weeks have been tough going for fishermen in the central and north central Wisconsin area.  We have had very unfavorable ice conditions combined with lots of snow and slush to say the least. This season is starting out much like last season ended with a mess?  But even with the adverse conditions we have been able to get out in a few locations by using snowmobiles and we are finding some nice fish.

On Wisconsin Outdoors

The walleye bite has been fairly good with most of our action coming on tip ups baited up with golden shiners in 14 to 24 FOW. We are setting our tip-ups so our baits are suspended 1 to 3 feet of the bottom and the action has been all day long with periods of increased action very early and late in the day.

On Wisconsin Outdoors

Crappies and bluegills have been consistent with good all-day action coming in 6 to 14 FOW depending on the lakes we are fishing. With the deeper water lakes the fish are being caught on a combination of tip-downs and jigging and on the shallower weed type lakes we are primarily jigging open pockets in the weeds with tiny tungsten panfish jigs.  Our best colors have been firetiger and purple when tipped with a couple of spikes or a wax worm but we have had several days where tiny plastics have worked very well for us.

We have also been catching some nice catfish by targeting deep water in some of the Wisconsin River flowages by working breaklines adjacent to the main river channel. Small to medium sized spoons tipped with a minnow head have been working very well for targeting these feisty cats.

Have a great week,
