Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report 7/11/14

Hooksetters Guide Service
Kevin Munson with his monster musky taken with Hooksetters Guide Phil Schweik

Outstanding musky bite this past week with some real GIANTS caught.  We had several fish in the 40 to 50 inch range that were caught this past week with one monster going 51 inches and having a 26 inch girth with a calculated weight at 43 pounds. This beast was caught by Kevin Munson from Madison Wisconsin while out with Hooksetters Guide Phil Schweik.  Most of our action has been on bucktails and jerkbaits but a few fish are coming on crankbaits and rubber baits too.  There is a good bite in the shallow weeds as well as some nice fish now out over deeper water holding off break lines and mid-lake structure and deep water humps.

The walleye bite has been very good with consistent action coming early and late in the day.   Jig and minnow or crawler combinations are working well but the jig and crawler rigs are catching the larger fish.  Most of the action is in 8 to 12 feet of water associated with current breaks and deep water structure.

The crappie bite remains consistent with some very nice fish being caught by anglers spider rigging or by guys slip drifting with tiny jig and minnow rigs set below slip bobbers at various depths.

If you are looking for action look no further than the catfish. Maybe not one of the most sought after species, but definitely one of the hardest fighting fish out there.  Try any deep hole in the river system and you will find them.. All you need is a simple set-up with a hook and sinker baited up with a crawler or a large minnow and your set.  Toss it into the basin of the hole and get ready they will find it.

For you bear hunters out there, now is the tome to get started with your bear baiting for the upcoming season.  With only about 60 days until season starts you want to make sure that you have plenty of great locations that are being consistently hit and ready, so when the time comes you are good to go.

Have a great week,

Phil Schweik
