Ashland Area Fishing Report for Oct. 9, 2014

~ Fishing Guide Roger LaPenter and wife Carolyn from Anglers All715/682-5754 (http://www.anglersallwisconsin.com), report the following:

This report is about the Ashland side of Chequamegon Bay.  Some of the best smallmouth bass fishing of the year is here and anglers are getting in on that classic fall bite.

The smallies are into their fall feeding patterns, frequenting their usual haunts such as the rock pile and breakwall.  Anglers are finding the best bite is on sucker minnows as the walleye are feeding heavily now to fatten up in anticipation of winter.

Trout and salmon are being caught at the mouths of the Sioux and Onion rivers, as well as off of Long Island.  Anglers are catching them early in the day mostly by flat-lining with stickbaits.

Carolyn LaPenter said the Coho salmon are not out in large numbers yet, but they are starting to show up as the water temperatures cool down.  “The ones that are being caught right now are the larger Cohos,” she noted.

The steelhead action is happening late in the day and should only get better as fall progresses.

The walleye are starting to transition, moving into shallow waters, and people are hooking them in the deeper weeds off the rock pile and the channel ledges.
