Ashland Area Fishing Report for Oct. 23, 2014

~ Fishing Guide Roger LaPenter and wife Carolyn from Anglers All, 715/682-5754 (http://www.anglersallwisconsin.com), report the following:

This report is about the Ashland side of Chequamegon Bay.  Fall fishing is at its best right now for many different species.  Smallmouth fishing continues to be solid.  The fish are really feeding well, and this is primetime for smallmouth fishing.

Steelhead fishing on the Brule has been getting better.  There has been a good push of fresh fish lately, and though there doesn't seem to be a ton of fish around this year, there are some really nice-sized fish.  Egg patterns and small nymphs dead-drifted under an indicator in the deeper holes and runs in the early mornings have been best.

“October is such a great month to be doing ANYthing outside and the good fishing has just been a bonus,” observed Luke Kavajecz, fishing guide at Anglers All.

“We were on the river today for musky, and there were a few willing fish,” he said earlier in the week.  “It’s always kind of cool to fool one of those fish with a fly rod.

“The water was a little high and on the chilly side, but the fishing was good for both northern pike and musky,” Luke continued.  “A drift-boat trip down a musky river in October is hard to beat!”

Out on the big water, the Cohos are around.  Some days seem better than others, but they're showing up and will continue to do so as fall progresses.  Trolling has been good between Houghton Point to the Onion River and near Long Island.  Flat-lining and planer boards with stickbaits are the way to go, according to Luke.

“Get out there and have some fun before the snow starts to fly!!” he added.

~ The Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce, www.visitashland.com, 1-800-284-9484, reports:

Fishing is always a thrilling adventure in the Ashland area!  Chequamegon Bay is famous for its world-class smallmouth bass fishing.

The 3rd annual Chick-uamegon, a lighthearted women’s 5K/10K walk/run and 20-mile bike race, offers terrific prizes and cute awards. Where else can you see happy, smiling runners wearing pastel-colored tutus, glitter face paint, pink wigs and butterfly wings?

Chick-uamegon participants are advised to come dressed to win in their most “bling” attire for this exciting and colorful event set for Saturday, Nov. 8. Finishers each receive a tiara and medal, plus there will be prizes for the top three participants wearing the most outlandish “bling” outfits imaginable.

New this year is the added challenge of a 20-mile bike race through the surrounding countryside, which will start at 9:30 a.m. The 5K and 10K run/walk steps off at 11 a.m. at Ashland’s Lake Superior Elementary School. For more information on Chick-uamegon or to register, visit www.chick-uamegon.com.

Steelhead fishing on the Brule River has picked up and fresh fish are arriving daily, according to Anglers All fishing guide Luke Kavajecz, who caught this beauty on a recent outing.
