Ashland Area Fishing Report for Jan. 15, 2015

This report is about the Ashland side of Chequamegon Bay.  We have great ice conditions out there and it's only getting better.

“The fishing in general is good and the ice is still growing out there,” said Roger LaPenter, Anglers All proprietor.  He said at the moment it is easy to get around on the ice and people are using four-wheelers or snowmobiles.

As noted last week, the ice is pretty good out towards Houghton Point and around the corner to Bodin’s.  According to Luke Kavajecz of Washburn, fishing guide with Anglers All, there have been numerous smaller splake and some real decent browns being caught out in about 20 foot of water.

“A few people are starting to venture out to the nearshore waters of Bayfield and Red Cliff, but just BE CAREFUL!!!” Luke said.  “Bring your ice bar and check your way out!”

As always, conditions can change rapidly on Lake Superior.  For your own safety and especially if you are unfamiliar with the area you will be fishing, hire a local guide or check with a bait shop prior to venturing out on any ice.

Roger said there is really good fishing right now in 40 FOW near Basswood Island off the Red Cliff shore.

In the bay proper, things haven't changed too much.  There has still been good perch action out of Second Landing.  Over towards Washburn, anglers are catching brown trout with a few Coho salmon and some whitefish mixed in.

The area’s inland lakes are all frozen solid and anglers are out there catching crappies.  Roger also noted that the bluegill fishing is good and some people are getting northern pike and walleye as well.

For the most complete and up-to-date fishing report, just give them a call at Anglers All and they will gladly keep you informed!
